"The New Japan" was an article written by Toru Hoshi, published in the November 1897 issue of Harper's Magazine, at that time called Harper's New Monthly Magazine. Toru Hoshi (1850-1901) was a Japanese statesman, and was the Japanese Minister to the United States from July 1896 to the end of 1897. He was assassinated on June 21, 1901.
The article gives a broad, substantial, concise and eloquent account of the rapid and momentous transformations which occurred in Japan during the Meiji Restoration. There is a foreshadowing of things to come near the end of the article.
